The ILCA World Council voted to appoint Nuno Gomes as the chair of the newly created Africa Region in January 2019.
Nuno Gomes has been involved with sailing since being an Optimist sailor and has sailed a number of different boats from the Laser, Vaurien and 470, to keel boats and off shore sailing in Africa and around the world.
In addition to participating in general club and sailing authority activities in Angola, he has been coordinator with the Angolan Nautical Sports Federation (FADEN) campaign for Rio 2016 and now Tokyo 2020 Olympic teams in the Laser and 470. At present, he is the coordinator for the Future Strategic program, the National Qualification ranking system and International ANG sailing.
Mr Gomes has embraced the development of African sailing actively since 2008 within the scope of the African Sailing Confederation (ASCON), and was elected Vice President of that organization in 2016. “I try to help promote awareness, and grow the number of athletes and sailing at both grass roots classes and more competitive Olympic path events. Wanting to contribute to sailing sport in the continent, with both well-designed and ambitious projects, in coordination with all MNAs, World Sailing and regionally represented International classes, I believe the next years will contribute to the consolidation of the development programs in Africa.”
ILCA welcomes Mr Gomes as a member of the World Council, anticipating that he will be an important member of the team in helping to promote Laser sailing in Africa and contribute to the benefit of the class world wide.
